1. Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus - Best UHP All-Season tire
Let’s start this list off with one of our favorite UHP All-Season tires, the Continental ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus. When Continental designed the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus, they wanted a tire that wouldn’t mean a sacrifice in performance vs traction, ride quality, and noise levels – in other words, a tire that can deliver year-round performance along with the kind of overall handling, cornering, braking, and steering response you’d expect from a UHP tire. That’s all, of course, in tandem with the kind of consistent, reliable grip that you can count on to get you through all kinds of weather conditions. The ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus starts to look like an even better value when you remember that most UHP and summer use a softer, stickier tread formulation that will harden and lose traction below 40-45 degrees, which is when they have to be dismounted and replaced with all-season tires. Continental expanded on the success of the ExtremeContact DWS06 and updated it in just about every area, starting with the Sport+ Tech package that delivers enthusiastic cornering ability and responsiveness. Reinforced 2-ply sidewalls and macroblocks in the tread help with handling that’s immediate and confident for an outstanding SimpleScore of 9.9 in that category. For year-round grip, there’s an advanced silica-enriched tread compound that’s designed for great wear properties and wet-weather traction. In rainy or light wintry conditions, a system of circumferential grooves, sweeping lateral grooves, and X-sipes give the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus an edge in grip for a traction score of 9.8. Continental covers the ExtremeContact DWS06 Plus with a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty (unlike most UHP tires), for a SimpleScore of 9.2 in the longevity department.
2. Falken Azenis FK460 A/S - Great UHP All-Season tire
For quite a few years now our team at SimpleTire has been pretty impressed with just about every tire in the Falken line, and the Azenis FK460 A/S is no exception. The Falken Azenis FK460 A/S is designed for long wear and dependable grip in all kinds of weather thanks to Falken’s advanced 4D Nano tread compound. It just stands to reason that tires would lose traction as tread depth wears down, but the innovative Emerging Grooves tech of the Azenis FK460 A/S is designed so the grooves open up and expand for extended performance even on worn tires. For reliable grip in wet or snowy weather, the circumferential grooves with chamfered edges and Canyon Groove design work as a system for a traction SimpleScore of 8.6.Durability is another real strength with this tire too – thanks in part to the wear-resistant properties of that 4D Nano tread compound, Falken covers the Azenis FK460 A/S with a 50,000 mile warranty. Our team arrived at a SimpleScore of 9.1 for longevity. Steering response, cornering, road manners, and braking performance are all direct and accurate with this tire, for a SimpleScore of 8.8 for handling. We also need to mention here that the Azenis FK460 A/S is designed for a ride that is quiet and composed on the highway, thanks to grooves that are acoustically tuned to cut wind noise and cancel certain frequencies for a minimum of road noise.
3. Bridgestone Potenza Sport - Best UHP tire
Now let’s talk about another excellent UHP tire, the Bridgestone Potenza Sport. The Potenza Sport is designed as an ultra-high-performance (UHP) tire that can offer the best of both worlds: year-round traction and a ride that’s quiet and refined, along with a thrilling, confident driving experience on wet or dry pavement. The Potenza Sport is designed from the ground up with a silica-rich tread formulation that offers great, sticky mechanical grip on the pavement, with a performance-oriented tread pattern that’s engineered to keep the most rubber possible in contact with the road. Four wide circumferential grooves route water through and behind the contact patch to boost wet–weather performance and avoid hydroplaning. A network of 3D sipes enhances tread stiffness for unparalleled cornering response and wet-weather traction, and a tuned tread pattern keeps road noise to a minimum by canceling certain resonances and frequencies. After looking at the reviews and data, that comes out to a SimpleScore of 9.9 for handling and 9.9 for traction. The Potenza Sport does lose a little ground when it comes to longevity, with a SimpleScore of 7.3. The Potenza Sport doesn’t come with a mileage warranty (most UHP tires don’t) and isn’t designed for winter conditions: the softer, stickier tread formulation will stiffen up and lose traction in colder weather. Like all UHP and summer tires, the Potenza Sport shouldn’t be used if temperatures are below 40-45 degrees F.
4. Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 (K120) - Great UHP tire
Next up is another great pick in the UHP category, the Ventus V12 evo2 (K120). The Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 (K120) is another tire that can be traced right back to the world of motorsports. Its tread radius, construction, and footprint are based on Hankook’s DTM racing profile, for the best high-speed performance. That means more tread in contact with the road and enhanced load distribution even during hard maneuvers, as well as very short braking distances. The wide steel belt package helps with high-speed handling and stability in wet or dry conditions, and the Ventus V12 evo2 (K120)’s structure and tread formulation is designed for good heat dispersal. A nice touch with the Ventus V12 evo2 (K120) is Hankook’s built-in alignment indicators in the tread surface itself, designed to let a driver know when the vehicle’s alignment is out of spec. The Hankook Ventus V12 evo2 (K120) gets SimpleScores of 8.8 for traction, 8.8 for handling, 8.0 for longevity, and an overall average SimpleScore of 8.5.
5. Toyo Proxes Sport A/S - Good UHP All-Season tire
For a tire that’s a bit more versatile, you might consider the Toyo Proxes Sport A/S. The Proxes A/S Sport is a tire that delivers all-season, year-round performance along with steering that’s quick and precise, short braking distances, and outstanding cornering ability. Our SimpleScore for traction is a very respectable 8.9, thanks to its comprehensive design of multi-wave sipes, angled grooves, and circumferential grooves that all function as a system for enhanced grip on wet, dry, or snowy pavement. Handling is another area where this tire is a very solid performer, thanks to a contact patch that’s optimized to ensure contact with the road at all times, a specialized rib design, and a silica-rich tread compound (SimpleScore: 9.1). The Proxes Sport is covered by a 40,000 mile warranty, enough to register a SimpleScore of 8.3 for longevity.
