1. Kumho Solus TA51A - Best All-Season tire
Let’s kick this list off with one of our favorites, the Solus TA51A from Kumho. The Kumho Solus TA51A is a versatile all-season tire for sedans, minivans, and crossovers that might come in at a little cheaper price point, but offers features, quality, and performance that are all premium-level. Kumho designed the Solus TA51A for excellent performance in wet weather, with circumferential grooves that prevent hydroplaning. When the snow starts flying and piling up on the roads, there’s a system of 3D interlocking sipes and 3D chamfered tread blocks that work as a system for confident grip. Kumho designed the Solus TA51A around an advanced tread compound, infused with a blend of multi-functionalized polymers and silica additives for long wear and great traction in wet or dry weather. The Solus TA51A is quiet on the road, too, with ribs in the tread that break up and disperse sound waves, keeping highway noise and vibrations to a minimum and canceling certain frequencies of road noise. Additionally, Kumho backs the Solus TA51a with a 75,000 mile or 65,000 mile warranty, depending on tire size. With an average SimpleScore of 9, the Solus TA51a offers excellent longevity (9.6) and traction (9.0) plus great handling (8.5).
2. Toyo Extensa A/S II - Great All-Season tire
Here we are with another great value in an all-season tire, the Toyo Extensa A/S II. This is a tire we’ve been impressed with for some time thanks to its great value and performance. The Extensa A/S II is designed from the ground up with an advanced silica-rich rubber compound that delivers reduced rolling resistance and improved fuel efficiency, along with long wear and reliable wet-weather traction. Toyo’s innovative design for the Extensa A/S II incorporates tread ribs that are optimized to balance stress and pressure across the tire’s tread face for more uniform wear as well as improved cornering and braking performance. Wet-weather traction is boosted with wide circumferential grooves that reduce the tendency to hydroplane on wet roads by diverting water behind the tire’s contact patch. For winter conditions, there’s a dense network of sipes that multiplies the traction you need to make it easier to get through on snowy or slushy roads. We also appreciate the nondirectional, symmetric tread design of the Extensa A/S II, making it easier for a tire shop to cross-rotate tires for even wear. Toyo backs the Extensa A/S II with a 75,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty.
3. Falken Wildpeak A/T3W - Best All-Terrain tire
For 4WD-equipped light trucks with LT215/75R15 tires, there’s the Falken Wildpeak A/T3W. According to Falken, the 3W stands for Wet, Winter, and Wear. That’s a pretty fair assessment, really; after all, the Wildpeak A/T3W has the tire industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service. The Falken tire delivers reliable grip with an aggressive all-terrain lug tread and a tread depth that’s a full 19/32”. A set of lugs wrap around from the shoulder onto the sidewall to offer enhanced lateral traction for cornering or clawing out of ruts. That’s all the reason we need to give the Wildpeak A/T3W a SimpleScore of 9.9 for traction. The Wear part of the 3W designation is also a definite strong point for this tire – the Wildpeak A/T3W has a reinforced sidewall and heat dispersal technology that guards the tire’s internal construction against excessive heat buildup along with a durable silica-infused tread formulation, step-down features and support ramps for offroad toughness. Falken covers the Wildpeak A/T3W with a 55,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty, sufficient for SimpleTire to award a SimpleScore of 8.9 for longevity. The Wildpeak A/T3W is a durable all-terrain tire that doesn’t come with any serious tradeoffs in the way of road manners and civilized behavior on the pavement, for a SimpleScore of 9.6 for handling.
4. GT Radial Maxtour All Season - Good All-Season tire
Next up is the GT Radial Maxtour All Season, an all-season tire that’s designed for year-round traction, premium-tire ride quality, and UHP-tire performance, all at a surprisingly affordable price point Steering response, cornering, and braking all beat expectations, with a solid center tread rib, stiff shoulder blocks, and an independent tread groove toward the shoulder. Our team looked at the data and gave the GT Radial Maxtour All Season a SimpleScore of a solid 7.8 for handling. For excellent grip on wet or dry pavement, GT Radial incorporated a combination of sipes, circumferential, and lateral/angled grooves for a SimpleScore of 8.0 for traction. Wear properties of the Maxtour All Season are also superlative; GT Radial covers it with a 70,000 mile warranty, which we calculated to a SimpleScore of 8.4 for longevity. All in all, the GT Radial Maxtour All Season is a tire that offers quick, predictable handling and a quiet, refined ride for excellent value and performance.
5. Westlake SU318 - Good All-Season tire
We’re going to wrap this list up with another great value in an all-season tire, the Westlake SU318. The SU318 is a versatile tire designed for a range of light trucks, SUVs, and crossovers. It’s capable and comfortable and offers year-round performance, long service, low noise, and confident handling. The SU318 gets SimpleScore numbers of 8.00 overall, which can be unpacked to 7.9 for handling, 8.1 for longevity, and 8.2 for traction. The Westlake SU318’s responsive and precise handling comes from a CAD-designed tread pattern that’s packed with angled shoulder blocks that are reinforced for extra rigidity to resist the inertia of hard cornering or sharp maneuvers. Year-round traction is enhanced by four wide circumferential grooves to route water away from the tire’s contact patch to resist hydroplaning. It also features angled grooves and a silica-rich tread formulation that helps with wet-weather performance. The SU318 is backed by a 50,000 mile warranty and comes from the factory with a full 12/32” worth of tread depth for great wear properties as well as improved traction.
