Saturn L300 Tires
Introduced in the late 90s, Saturn’s L Series of sedans and wagons were powered by 4-cylinder or V6 engines and were conceived of as solid, comfortable cars. Unfortunately, the L series from Saturn was plagued by build quality issues, including engine and transmission failures and general fit and finish problems. Saturn L’s were recalled to address brake and taillight failures as well as timing chain problems that led to engine failures. The L300 was discontinued in 2004 due to poor sales. The Wilmington, DE plant where they were manufactured was then switched to production of the Pontiac Solstice; Saturn L-series cars were succeeded in the company lineup by the Saturn Aura.
Here at SimpleTire, our team went through the catalog and decided on the best Saturn L300 tires, including all-season, all-weather, and winter tires. We then ranked them in Best/Great/Good order and used our SimpleScore system to assign a numerical value to each one for the categories of traction, handling, and longevity. Ready? Let’s go in for a closer look:
1. Yokohama Avid Ascend LX: Best All-Season tire
Here at SimpleTire, we run across a lot of tires from Yokohama over the years and have been pretty impressed with them, and the Yokohama Avid Ascend LX is no exception. The Avid Ascend LX’s year-round grip is enough for a SimpleScore of 8.6 for traction, thanks to a network of circumferential grooves, lateral grooves, angled grooves, and wavy 3D sipes for performance in all kinds of weather. Treadwear properties are another distinct advantage of the Avid Ascend LX; it features a large, square contact patch that helps equalize and even out treadwear and distribution of vehicle weight, along with Yokohama’s L-2 polymer blend rubber formulation for wear resistance. We give the Avid Ascend LX a 9.7 for longevity – that 85,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty is hard to beat for any tire. All those tread features (along with large, reinforced shoulder blocks and a solid center rib) also work together to provide short braking distances, predictable, neutral cornering, and steering response that’s crisp and immediate – we give the Avid Ascend LX a SimpleScore of 8.7 for handling.
2. General Altimax RT45: Best All-Season tire
Next up is the General Altimax RT45. The Altimax RT45 is a more affordable all-season tire, but don’t let that fool you; this is a tire that offers sharp performance and value that rivals tires that cost much, much more. It’s an excellent choice for performance in all kinds of weather conditions thanks to a tested all-season tread design, and General Tire covers the Altimax RT45 with either a 65,000 or 75,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty (depending on tire size). After doing the calculations, we gave the Altimax RT45 a very strong SimpleScore of 9.9 for longevity. The Altimax RT45 is a tire you can depend on to deliver year-round traction, a refined ride, low noise, and solid, predictable handling and braking performance (SimpleScore for traction: 9.0). With a dense layout of sipes and lateral grooves and a solid center rib that’s designed for improved road manners and steering response, we give the Altimax RT45 a SimpleScore of 8.7 for handling. Another innovation with the Altimax RT45 is the visual alignment indicators that help inform drivers of wheel alignment that’s out of spec. The words “Replace Tire” are molded into the tread and are only visible when the tread depth reaches a minimum of 2/32, the minimum tread depth allowable in most states. Select sizes of the Altimax RT45 are available with a great-looking outlined white letter sidewall.
3. Firestone Winterforce 2: Best Winter tire
Next up is our pick for a winter tire in the lineup – the Firestone Winterforce 2. The Winterforce 2 is the tire that you can count on for the type of snowy roads and winter weather where there’s a good chance no other tire could get you from point A to point B and back. The Winterforce 2’s winter tread is loaded with sweeping directional grooves, wide circumferential grooves, and a dense sipe pattern that multiplies traction and surface area to chew through ice and slush. The Firestone Winterforce 2 is also pre-drilled for easy installation of studs in case of icy conditions, warranting the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating – and a SimpleScore of 8.3 for traction. As always, check your state laws for the legality of studded tires and any restrictions as to when they can be used. A semi-solid center rib and wide shoulder blocks deliver short braking distances, precise cornering, and great response to driver inputs, for a SimpleScore of 8.1 for handling. The longevity score is 8.3, but it’s important to keep in mind that winter tires are designed specifically for cold weather. Tire manufacturers advise against using them if temperatures are above 45 degrees F, as the softer, more pliable tread compound will wear prematurely in warmer weather.
While these are the best Saturn L300 tires on the road today, there are plenty of other options out there. Check out these tires if you’re looking for a more affordable set of tires for your Saturn L300:
4. Toyo Celsius II: Great All-Weather tire
All-weather tires might be kind of a new thing to some drivers. You can think of them as an all-season tire that’s designed to more or less split the difference between all-season and dedicated winter tires with features that can enhance winter performance. The Toyo Celsius II is a great example of this category, with the ride comfort, handling, and low noise of a Grand Touring tire along with a distinct leg up in performance and grip in wet or wintry conditions. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Celsius II is Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certified for severe winter conditions, with a silica-rich tread formulation that’s designed for long wear as well as improved traction on wet or snowy roads. The Celsius II’s asymmetric tread incorporates large, solid tread blocks and a dense pattern of multi-wave sipes for hundreds of extra hair-thin edges to dig into snow and slush, for a SimpleScore of 8.5 for traction. Cornering, braking, steering response, and high-speed stability, are all excellent; that tread pattern and a high-stiffness polyester casing with two steel belts, a jointless nylon cap ply, and a stiff shoulder means a SimpleScore of 8.6 for handling. With a 60,000 mile manufacturer’s tread life warranty, we give the Toyo Celsius II a SimpleScore of 9.6 for longevity.
5. GT Radial Maxtour LX: Great All-Season tire
Let’s close out this list with the Maxtour LX from GT Radial, an all-season tire that’s designed for year-round traction with premium-tire ride quality and UHP-tire performance, and at a surprisingly affordable price. Steering response, cornering, and braking are all excellent, with a solid center tread rib, stiff shoulder blocks, and an independent tread groove toward the shoulder. Our take on this tire registers a SimpleScore of a solid 9.1 for handling. For an excellent grip on wet or dry pavement, you can rely on a combination of sipes, circumferential, and lateral/angled grooves for a SimpleScore of 9.1 for traction. Wear properties of the GT Radial Maxtour LX are also superlative; GT Radial covers it with a 70,000 mile warranty, which is enough for us to give it a SimpleScore of 9.4 for longevity. All in all, the GT Radial Maxtour LX is a tire that offers great value with performance, with quick, predictable handling and a quiet, forgiving ride.
