Saturn Vue Tires
Introduced in 2002, the Vue was a compact crossover SUV from GM’s Saturn division. It was available in four trim levels: XE, XR, the performance-oriented Red Line, and the hybrid Green Line. First-gen Saturn Vues were built on the Chevy Equinox platform, with a choice of 4-cylinder or V6 engines. The Red Line model featured not only a performance-oriented Honda V6 but also a lower ride height, a tighter suspension, recalibrated, quicker power steering, and an aerodynamics package. The Green Line version was a mild hybrid with an innovative “belt alternator starter” system that employs the electric motor rather than a stop/start system. The hybrid drivetrain had a payoff in the form of improved fuel economy of 27 mpg city/32 mpg highway, which was the best fuel economy of any SUV or crossover sold in model year 2007.
The Vue was equipped with a Honda four-cylinder, but the Red Line version was available with a 257 horsepower 3.6L V6 engine. Second-generation Vue models were manufactured in Mexico and based on the German-developed Open Antara crossover. When GM reorganized after its 2009 bankruptcy, the Saturn brand was dropped, and with it went the Vue.
Here at SimpleTire, we’ve put together a roundup of some of the best Saturn Vue tires, including all-season, all-weather, and winter tire options that are all ranked Best/Great/Good by our SimpleScore system. Ready? Let’s go in for a closer look:
1. Bridgestone WeatherPeak - Best All-Weather tire
The Bridgestone WeatherPeak is a great all-weather tire choice for your Saturn Vue. If you’ve ever had to contend with deep snow and hard winter weather, you’re usually going to find out the hard way that many all-season tires are just not able to reliably get you through anything more than a light dusting of snow or slush on the pavement. All-weather tires are designed with much the same performance parameters as all-season tires but with more of a focus on traction in winter conditions. With that in mind, Bridgestone designed the Weatherpeak’s tread with a dense pattern of sipes, the hair-thin slits that add hundreds of extra biting edges that give drivers the extra advantage in winter grip that they need. While most tread features are less effective as a tire wears, Bridgestone’s sipes are a full-depth 3D design that continues to boost your winter traction even as the miles pile up. In addition, the Weatherpeak is designed with “snow vices” that build snow-to-snow friction by actually trapping and retaining snow in their grooves. Unsurprisingly, the Bridgestone Weatherpeak has the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake certification for severe winter service; the test track and real-world experience have shown winter braking distances that are as much as 30 feet shorter than the competition’s tires. After taking that all into account, we gave the Bridgestone Weatherpeak a SimpleScore of 9.7 for traction. Steering response and cornering are also strong points; the Weatherpeak’s SimpleScore of 9.5 for handling comes from its rubber formulation and tread features. Road manners, steering response, and cornering ability are all top-notch with this tire, across a wide range of changing weather conditions. Bridgestone backs the Weatherpeak with a 70,000 mile limited manufacturer’s tread life warranty, the kind of warranty coverage that’s enough to inspire a SimpleScore of 9.8 for longevity.
2. Goodyear Winter Command - Best Winter Tire
Next up is our pick for Best Winter Tire, the Goodyear Winter Command is the kind of tire you can count on to reliably get you through the snow, slush, and muck of winter driving – the kind of roads where an all-season tire is likely to have you slipping and sliding and trying to stay out of the ditch. The Winter Command gets its great winter grip from a combination of 3D zigzag sipes and a directional tread pattern with sweeping lateral grooves and wide longitudinal grooves. For the kind of weather when an ice storm turns your roads hockey rink-slick, the Winter Command is pre-drilled for easy installation of studs (remember that studded tires are not legal in all states and only during certain months in others – check your state laws). It’ll come as no surprise that this tire is certified with the Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service. Taking all this into account, we give the Goodyear Winter Command an outstanding 9.9 SimpleScore for traction. This tire’s braking, cornering, and steering properties made an impression on us too (thanks to a stiffer shoulder and solid center rib) – in the handling category, this tire gets a SimpleScore of 9.5. Despite not having a mileage warranty, the WinterCommand’s wear properties are also excellent, with a SimpleScore of 9.5 for longevity. Just remember that any winter tire uses a softer, stickier tread compound that will wear prematurely in warmer weather. Manufacturers advise against using any winter tire when temperatures are consistently above 45 degrees F.
While these are the best Saturn Vue tires on the market, there are plenty of other tires to consider:
3. Nokian WR G4 SUV - Great All-Weather tire
We know you’re probably curious about the name - yes, Nokian has the same parent company as Nokia phones. Based in Finland, this tire manufacturer has put in a lot of time developing the kind of tires that can get drivers through the tough Scandinavian winters. Technically, the Nokian WR G4 SUV is classed as an all-weather tire; however, its design goals have more of an emphasis on winter performance. In other words, this is a tire that’s just as capable in either deep snow or on a sun-blasted Texas ranch road in 100-degree-plus temperatures. Nokian designed the WR G4 SUV with a long-wearing, sustainably manufactured rubber compound that stays flexible for good traction in subfreezing weather. An Aramid-reinforced sidewall aids in durability and stability for cornering. When you need decisive traction in wet or wintry weather, there’s an asymmetric tread pattern that features circumferential, angled, and lateral grooves that work together to channel away water and slush and resist hydroplaning. Nokian’s innovative “centipede sipe” design means traction in rough winter conditions that are at the same level as what the best winter tires have to offer. It’s also worth mentioning that the low rolling resistance of the WR G4 SUV makes it a good choice for EVs (as well as your Saturn Vue) and its quiet ride comes from a thread pitch that’s randomized and computer-tuned to cancel certain frequencies. With a 60,000 mile limited manufacturer tread life warranty and the industry’s Three Peak Mountain Snowflake rating for severe winter service, we feel that the Nokian WR G4 SUV is a great do-all tire and a strong performer all the way around. SimpleTire’s SimpleScore data for the Nokian WR G4 SUV comes out to an overall score of 9.2, with a 9.2 for handling, 9 for longevity, and 9.6 for traction.
4. General Altimax RT45 - Great All-Season tire
We’re going to wrap things up with a tire we’ve been consistently impressed with, the General Altimax RT45. Don’t let the lower price point of the General Altimax RT45 scare you off, because this is a tire that presents a great value. It’s a tire that assures you of the performance you need in all kinds of weather conditions, with a proven all-season tread design. Our SimpleScore gives this tire a 9.9 for longevity, seeing that General Tire backs the Altimax RT45 with either a 65,000 or 75,000 mile warranty (depending on tire size). Year-round traction, a forgiving ride, low noise, and predictable, consistent handling and braking performance are all strong points with the Altimax RT45 for a traction SimpleScore of 9.0. We chalked up a SimpleScore of 8.7 for handling, thanks to a network of sipes and lateral grooves and a solid center rib that boosts road manners and steering response. Another great feature of this tire is the visual alignment indicator, designed so a driver can keep tabs on excessive wear or alignment that’s out of spec. The words “Replace Tire” are molded into the tread so that they’re only revealed when the tread depth reaches a minimum of 2/32”. Additionally, select sizes of the Altimax RT45 are available with a great-looking outlined white letter sidewall.
